Gavin Rebello- Director and Optometrist - Holland Opticians and Skye Optometrists

How long have you been part of HG?
Imran invited me to speak at one of your Fishtanks and an Annual Retreat and I was blown away by the positivity, openness and friendliness of everyone.
I’ve found other groups of opticians somewhat dreary and full of cynics - but HG was so different. I was hooked! I bought into Holland in Malvern in 2017.
We don’t have many “multiple” SHARKs, I suppose that means you don’t have a typical day?
That’s what I love about my life - the variety. Sure it has its challenges - some long days, some curved balls - but I’m fired up. From creating team huddles to help the team deliver on our goals, to thinking about how we can add some wows to our customer journey, to designing a shop fit. Having more than one practice does mean you have to think differently - you have to be organised and lead your team effectively. You have to surround yourself with people you trust. Each team has a different dynamic and each practice has a different personality. The thing that I love the most is seeing potential in a team member and being a catalyst to see them blossom. This makes me smile very much.
When you joined the optical industry, did you see yourself where you are now?
Not at all! I’m very good at seeing opportunities and I’m very good at pushing myself to change it up. This has come through reading many leadership type books and my yoga and chi kung teacher training courses which has a massive aspect of personal development.
What is your favourite brand for 2019?
What do you love most about your practices?
The team - especially when we see individuals shine and smiles on patients’ faces
Where do you see the industry in five years’ time?
Independents are fewer but stronger. Two types: the pseudo hospital shared care clinics (working very hard for little return and lots of red tape) and then the more style-based practices where customers love the experience and love their glasses.
Chains continue to dumb down and commoditise.
Shift in income from eyecare to eyecare and audiology.
When you’re not in the practices, what do you like to get up to?
My yoga mat - or walking in the Malvern Hills.
I love delivering workshops on leadership too - I’m doing a bit of work for medical consultants and surgeons at the moment.
What does the perfect holiday look like to Gavin Rebello?
Waking up to a stunning view - sea or mountains, yoga/chi kung session, leisurely breakfast, then just getting out into some stunning landscapes. A long, relaxed lunch. Good company.
What is the best bit of advice you have received?
I’ve joined up two great pieces of advice, and this is a big part of 2019 for me…
“If it is important enough to you, you’ll get it done, if not you’ll find an excuse. Behind every excuse lies a fear- understand and address that fear, then you can reach your full potential”
Biggest pet peeve?
Negative close-minded people
What’s your karaoke song?
Amplify recommended I don’t sing to protect everyone’s hearing…
